Job Summary.

Tanzania SWISSAID

Background:

  • A non-governmental organization with its main office in Switzerland and operations in nine nations is called SWISSAID. It has been operating in Tanzania since 1972 with an emphasis on extractives, gender equality, and small-scale farming. Together with other like-minded AE stakeholders, Swissaid Tanzania is supporting the government of Tanzania in its attempts to elevate fish farming to the status of Tanzania's premier agricultural industry. Swissaid Tanzania will station one project officer in the Lindi Region as a member of the implementing team along with other assistance.

Marine and Fresh Fish Farming Project Officer

Ngongo/Tulieni - Nanenane ground is the place of duty (Lindi Region)

Areas for marine and fresh fish farming interventions:

  • Extension services to communities engaged in marine fish farming's site selection.
  • Extension services on best practices for building earthen ponds, dykes, and gates are provided to marine fish farmers.
  • Services for tilapia breeding, farming, and transitioning from fresh to salt water.
  • Extension services for fish farming management, including tidal water exchanges, time to harvest, manuring, feeding, and stocking rates.
  • Extension services on the protection and restoration of mangrove forests for climate change adaptation and mitigation.

Areas of service:

  • The regions of Mtwara, Lindi, and Ruvuma are the key locations for field activities, which are closely coordinated and working together with the district and regional forestry and fisheries administrations.

The project officer's main responsibilities and duties are:

  • Consolidate the development, upkeep, and administration of the upgraded ponds and the resulting
  • value chain for fish farming is established, resulting in an increase in food and money.
  • Improve the fish farmers' understanding of how to manage the production of milk fish and tilapia and aid in the creation of marketing networks.
  • In order to continue the activities at the end of this phase, support the umbrella organization's capacity building efforts as well as the exit strategy and post-project sustainability plan.
  • Provide technical support for both freshwater and marine fish farming, and make recurrent field trips to fish farmer organizations, especially those in remote locations.
  • Organize additional income-generating activities (IGAs) like beekeeping that are located near the mangrove forests.
  • Encourage the adoption of emerging technology, especially specialized smartphone apps.
  • Make sure project materials on tilapia, milkfish, and pond construction are updated, made simpler, and delivered to farmers as training tools so they may use them to create basic business and production plans.
  • Use the materials to instruct lead farmers and fellow farmers during Field Farmer Schools (FFS).
  • To keep track of performance, stocking feed and manure inputs, and water quality, develop basic performance monitoring tools as a foundation. Then, direct production accordingly.
  • Prepare plans for pond repairs and gate rehabilitation with the help of groups, provide materials, monitor work, offer advice on designs and engineering, maintain photographic records, and assure quality.
  • Encourage self-help to control productivity and water quality through maintaining dikes, deepening ponds, and other tasks.
  • Observe tilapia hatchery pond construction and activity.
  • Set production goals, create production plans, maintain regular event reports, and work with DFO 
  • Reporting to quarterly Technical Project Meetings, Extension Agent and Consulting Groups prepare quarterly progress reports against results and actions.
  • Together with the District Fisheries Officer and other important stakeholders, establish solid working relationships and coordinate your efforts.
  • Support the project's inclusion of gender by working with the Swissaid gender focus point.
  • Perform whatever more tasks as necessary to produce results.

credentials and expertise:

  • possess a first-level university degree in fisheries, aquaculture, or aquatic sciences with a focus on marine fish farming.

OR.

  • possess an advanced degree and/or considerable expertise in aquaculture and/or fisheries.
  • demonstrated project management and leadership skills, as well as the ability to work well with various coastal communities.
  • Interest and practical knowledge in the field of marine and freshwater fish farming.
  • Working with numerous partners, such as the government, civil society organizations, academia, and the commercial sector, is something you should have experience with.

Time Frame of Employment

  • The Project Officer will begin a six-month probationary phase during which they will work on the project before their contract is renewed annually, subject to funding availability.

Manager of Projects Agroecology

Assignment: Dodoma and Bihawana

  • Intervention areas for small-scale farming:
  • enhancing the output and productivity of smallholder farmers through varied agroecological farming
  • enhancing smallholder farmers' ability to earn a living by adding valuable agroecological production chains.
  • enhancing sustainability and accountability through strengthening smallholder farmers' associations.
  • Promote agro-ecology in national agricultural policies, plans, and programs as a way to boost the sustainability of the agriculture sector's productivity and profitability.

Areas of service:

  • Field operations are mostly occurring in the regions of Morogoro, Mtwara, Lindi, Ruvuma, and to a lesser extent Pwani.
  • Selected districts in Dodoma will be under the project officer's jurisdiction.

Job objective:

  • Join the Bihawana FTC crew in promoting the facility and obtaining credible training in ecological organic agriculture.

  • Take the lead in organizing and carrying out agro-ecological farming-related activities, including but not limited to the project "Enhancing agro-ecological demonstration & training capability of the BFTC."

  • Organize training sessions, lead them, and participate in the creation of training materials.

Areas of service:

  • The regions of Mtwara and Lindi, Morogoro, Dodoma, Pwani Bagmoyo, and to a lesser extent other regions are where field operations are concentrated.

Job objective:

  • Contribute to Outcome 1 "Improved sustainable rural development" as part of the Swissaid Tanzania Country Programme 2019–2024.
