Kilimanjaro: Firefighters douse a flame on a mountain in Tanzania-october 2022

An official reports that some of the fire that emergency personnel are attempting to put out on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's tallest summit, has been contained.

According to Prof. Eliamani Sedoyeka from Tanzania's ministry of natural resources and tourism, "We have observed remarkable success in containing the fire.

The fire began on Friday night close to a popular climbing route on the mountain.

How the fire originated is unclear

Social media videos shared on Saturday seemed to depict massive flames and a smokey haze consuming portions of the forest surrounding the mountain.

Hundreds of volunteers and emergency personnel went to the area to aid in efforts to put out the fire.

According to the Tanzanian publication Mwananchi, 500 people, including firefighters, park rangers, tour operators, and civilians, were reportedly present at the scene on Sunday.

It further stated that assistance with efforts to put out the fire had been requested from the army

Prof. Sedoyeka told reporters on Sunday that the fire has been mostly contained as a result of the efforts of volunteers and first responders.

He continued by expressing his optimism that the fire would be fully contained by Sunday night.

So far, there have been no recorded casualties

Abraham Moshi, a local tour guide who was assisting in putting out the fire, claimed that the blaze had not reached any walkways or camping areas on the mountain. lowering the possibility of casualties

Two years have passed since a week-long fire on Mount Kilimanjaro's slopes burned thousands of hectares of forest.

Thousands of tourists climb Mount Kilimanjaro each year, which is 5,895m (19,341ft) high and a well-known tourist destination.
