Amazulu Fc History
History from the beginning (1932–1973)
- AmaZulu, one of South Africa’s oldest clubs, was founded in 1932 by Zulu migrant labourers and was initially known as the Zulu Royal Conquerors. The club was subsequently introduced to then-Zulu king Solomon, who changed the team’s name to Zulu Royals, changed the team’s colors to royal blue and white, and added the shield to their logo.

- The team’s guardian was initially Prince Bayisikili, who was later replaced by Prince Sithela, and the team’s headquarters were at the eMbelebeleni Royal Kraal, by which time the team colors had changed to bottle green and white. On the day of King Bhekizulu’s funeral in 1968, the team traveled to eMandeni to play a Cup game against SAPPI Homestars, which they defeated 4-2. The club was meant to follow the King’s coffin on the day of the funeral, but Mr. Shezi, Mr. Nsele, and Mr. Magwaza ended up escorting the King in the team’s outfit.
- After that game, there was a disagreement among club supporters because some of them, notably Prince Sithela, questioned how the team could play a game on the day of the Zulu King’s funeral, when the team was expected to grieve the King’s death. The disagreement continued, and Mr Gideon Sibiya and Mr. Ntuli, who accompanied the club to eMandeni, decided to transfer the club from eMbelebeleni to eWema, where it was no longer recognized at the eMbelebeleni Royal Kraal.
- At the end of 1970, the remaining committee members, Mr Mkhize and Mr Ralph Mabaso, decided to rebuild the squad from the ground up, recruiting players, purchasing a kit, and appointing Mr Bethuel Masondo as team manager. The club was registered as Zulu Royals United by the committee, and Mr. Bethuel Masondo was the sole director. They opted to relocate the team’s headquarters to eMbelebeleni Royal Kraal.
- In 1971, the African Wanderers of Kwa-Zulu Natal were having troubles while playing in the National Professional League (NPSL), prompting the NPSL to order that the Kwa-Zulu Natal Football Association suspend African Wanderers from the NPSL and recommend another Kwa-Zulu Natal team to replace them. The Kwa-Zulu Natal Football Association then suggested the Union Jacks, Durban City All Blacks, Zulu Royals United, or Young Dribblers.
- Mr RD Sishi, the chairman of the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) at the time, concluded that Zulu Royals United should replace African Wanderers in the NPSL since Zulu Royals represented the Zulu Nation from the Royal Kraal and had a larger fan base than the clubs recommended.
- Zulu Royals replaced African Wanderers in 1971 and went on to finish sixth on the log and be named club of the year. The club won the N.P.S.L league title the next year, 1972, with 44 points from 26 matches and only two losses.
- In 1973, Zulu Royal suffered a major setback when the club’s then-manager, Mr. Bethwell Masondo, quit and took several prominent players with him, dividing the team. Following this terrible tragedy, the club entered a mid-season slump that would prevent them from successfully defending their league title. The supporters took over the operation of the club in 1974, and the team was renamed AmaZulu Football Club that year. Some supporters, led by Mr. Francis Dlamini, who oversaw the reserve team, chose to part ties with the reserve team and renamed it Zulu Royals United, with the nickname “esikotshi.”
- Mr. Manana and Mr. Nxumalo, who bought the team for R 4000.00, were followed by Mr. Merikan Madlala from Lamontville, who was then followed by a committee made up of Mr. Ngongoma, Mr. Duma, Mr. Mathe, Mr. Dlamini, Mr. Biyela, and Nhleko.
