- Global Resource Alliance – Tanzania (GRA-TZ) is an international non-profit association headquartered in Musoma, Tanzania. It is affiliated with the US non-profit, Global Resource Alliance (GRA). GRA-TZ promotes natural, holistic and sustainable solutions to the challenges of poverty, malnutrition, disease and environmental degradation in the Mara Region of Tanzania. GRA-TZ has been active with reforestation and agroforestry since 2011 through a partnership with WeForest, a Belgian NGO promoting Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR), creating a movement and engaging the local communities and authorities to act responsibly toward the environment. Our planting operations started in Kinesi and have expanded to Butiama, Tarime and other districts in the Mara region, planting over 2 million trees in the landscape.
GRA-TZ Hillside Program
- GRA-TZ, in partnership with WeForest, is planning to implement a four-year initiative called the Butiama Hillside Forest Restoration Project, re-greening the surrounding landscape in Butiama District starting in 2023. This project will focus on nurturing hillsides to return to forest and increasing the tree cover in the wider landscape. Forest restoration will be done by assisted natural regeneration on the hillside and the introduction of woodlots and agroforestry systems in the buffer zone of the wider landscape, that will improve the livelihoods of the local population. Implementation of activities in the forest and farming landscapes will include training, technical and governance support and monitoring. WeForest is the main donor for the project and will provide technical and programmatic guidance and support through the life of the project.
Role
- The Agroforestry Coordinator will oversee all aspects of the agroforestry component of the project. He/she will also report directly to and assist the Project Manager. He/she will be responsible for leading the development, implementation and evaluation of all aspects of the agroforestry program. He/she will directly manage three Agroforestry Extensionists who will work directly with the local farmer groups across project villages, as well as the Nursery Manager.
Responsibilities
- Core duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Directly supervise the Agroforestry Extensionists and Nursery Manager
- Coordinate all agroforestry and woodlot intervention activities within project villages
- Coordinate the selection and organization of farmer groups
- Coordinate internal and external training workshops for farmer groups
- Lead on the development of locally-appropriate training materials in English and Swahili
- Develop and lead M&E on agroforestry in coordination with the M&E Officer
- Lead on value chain development for selected cash crops
- Provide regular detailed financial and programmatic reporting
- Assist in processing administrative requests/documents
- Coordinate the procurement of all items for the agroforestry program and tree nursery
- Produce quality deliverables on time to ensure they meet milestones per their scope, timeline, and budget
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science, or equivalent experience, in agroforestry, agriculture, forestry, rural development or equivalent
- A minimum of four years’ relevant work experience in smallholder agroforestry program management in a supervisory role, preferably in Tanzania
- Excellent program management skills: budgets, workplans, M&E, logframes, training, presenting and reporting under tight deadlines and little supervision
- Excellent communications and interpersonal skills; ability to mentor and motivate others
- Ability to work with stakeholders from different backgrounds: local communities, technical and non-technical and international partners
- Fluent in English and Swahili (speaking and writing)
- In possession of a driving license and experience with driving motorbikes and vehicles
- Able to re-locate and flexible in terms of work hours and living conditions
- Must be a citizen of Tanzania
Terms & Conditions
- Contract type: full-time renewable contract initially for 1 (one) year
- Start date: mid or end of February 2023
- Location: Butiama, Mara Region
- Hours of Work: minimum of 8 hours per day (flexibility in daily hours is essential)
- Reporting line: report directly to the Project Manager
- Package: competitive package for a small NGO, with remuneration based on experience
