How to get more job interviews

  JobApp       Sunday, December 25, 2022

You come across an interesting job posting online. You send a customized résumé and cover letter in hope of a response. After six weeks, you're still waiting, your excitement has subsided, and you've come to the conclusion that your resume has vanished into thin air. Don't give up.

Taking initiative in your job hunt can increase your likelihood of getting interviews. With these six suggestions, you can increase your success.

Are You Using the Same Old Cover Letter?

Perhaps you use the same great resume, cover letter, and introductory email for all openings, so you are aware that they are all immaculate. Sadly, this approach will fail.

The job description, keep in mind, defines precisely what the employer seeks in their perfect applicant, therefore it contains hints as to which of your qualities you should highlight in your cover letter. You may be doing something incorrectly if your application appears exactly the same before you find the position, after you read about it, and when you are prepared to push submit.

Networking

Never apply online if you have a direct connection to the company. You'll get more interviews if you can get introduced by someone they know!

Use the Backdoor.

Once you know the job title and location, look on LinkedIn or use Google to find the name of the hiring manager or department head. If this doesn’t work, call and ask someone in some other function who’s the VP of the department. The big idea: use the job posting as a lead to work rather than an application button to press.

Do You Simply Send Off Your Application and Wait?

Many people fail to realize that there’s more to getting an interview than simply pressing submit. In fact, the majority of the work is done after the application’s sent in.

Pressing submit is equivalent to placing your resume on a recruiter’s desk, only to have a slew of resumes dumped on top of it seconds later. By simply waiting for them to find your materials on their own, you risk the chance that they may never even see it in the first place.

Be Different.

I had one candidate prepare a competitive analysis for a product marketing position in the telecommunications industry. He sent it to the VP who routed it to the Director. He told me he got an interview as a result.

All of the Above and More Below.

Don’t give up even if these don’t work. The key is the need to be different to get noticed, and once noticed, prove you can do the work even if your skills and experiences aren’t a perfect match.
