• Leading research organization in Africa with a track record of creating, evaluating, and approving health-related inventions is Ifakara Health Institute (IHI). Our primary strategic mandate for research, training, and services serves as our motivation. The activity of the institute encompasses a broad range of scientific fields, including biological and ecological sciences, intervention studies, research on health systems, monitoring and evaluation, and policy translation. IHI has a more than 50-year history. It is a privately owned non-profit company with a Tanzanian registration.
• Starting off: IHI's more than 50-year history began with the Swiss biologist Dr. Rudolf Geigy's 1949 visit to Ifakara. Geigy, a researcher from the Swiss Tropical Institute in Basel who died in 1995, was looking for a field site to study tropical diseases. He established the Swiss Tropical Institute Field Laboratory (STIFL) there eight years later.
• The term "Ifakara" means "a place you go to die," reflecting the historically high disease load in the region prior to the start of significant control measures.
• Transformation: In the years following the country's independence in 1961, STIFL was instrumental in preparing medical personnel to serve the nation. Through the Rural Aid Center, the government gave STIFL the mandate to perform the function.
• It was created to carry out the task.
